There are a few good ways to lock down your computer if you intend to step away, but you don't want to shut it down. Simply locking the current user account is the first obvious option, but it has a few drawbacks, particularly, if there is an important process that needs to be completed. Mouse Lock offers a simple, yet effective solution. The application locks the mouse cursor and dims the screen, to prevent anyone from using your computer. Of course, the mouse can be unlocked instantly by typing in a password.

You can have Mouse Lock up and running right away, because it doesn't need to be installed. Also, the application is offered completely free of charge, with no hidden fees or restrictions. It works on all modern Windows systems and it doesn't have any special requirements.

The mouse cursor can be put on lockdown immediately, once you launch the application. All you have to do is type and retype a password and click a button, but you can also make a few tweaks before locking the cursor. You can set the software to kill the Task Manager, suck the cursor to the center of the screen or simply hide it or confine it to the password window. Additionally, Mouse Lock can prevent the password window from being moved, protect against termination from shutting down and it can be set to accept a USB device as a key.

When you lock the cursor, a password window will show up and the screen will be dimmed around it. Depending on your settings, you may be able to move the moue only withing the password window or you may not be able to move it at all. The only way to end the lockdown is to type in your set password and hit the Enter key. The best part is that everything works flawlessly. The application's controls are highly responsive and you won't have any trouble, regardless of what settings you wish to make.

When it comes to protecting your computer when you step away, you can't ask for a simpler and more effective solution than Mouse Lock.

Pros

The application locks the mouse cursor in the center of the screen and it dims the background, until a password is provided. It provides you with a good amount of configuration options. It is also possible to set up an unlocking system with a USB device.

Cons

There are no obvious design flaws or functionality gaps to address.
